IKS Program for Preschools

Rooted Learning for the Foundational Years

The IKS Program for Preschools is designed to bring the richness of Indian Knowledge Systems into early childhood education through joyful, experiential learning.

The program introduces children to meaningful experiences drawn from India’s living traditions, stories, music, nature, festivals, art, and exploration, helping them grow with curiosity, creativity, emotional balance, and a sense of belonging.

Designed for children aged 2 to 6 years, the program supports preschools in creating learning environments where culture, creativity, inquiry, and joy become a natural part of everyday learning.

“The IKS Program has brought a beautiful balance of culture and curiosity into our classrooms. Our children truly enjoy these experiences, and we can see their confidence and awareness growing.”

What is the IKS Program for Preschools

Many preschools today strive to create engaging environments for children. Classrooms are colourful, activities are creative, and learning often includes art, stories, and play.

Yet even in such environments, an important dimension of early childhood learning is often missing, a deeper connection with culture, nature, and the rhythms of life.

Children may learn colours, shapes, letters, and numbers, but they rarely experience the simple practices that once naturally shaped childhood, greeting with respect, listening to meaningful stories, observing the changing seasons, celebrating festivals with understanding, or developing a quiet awareness of the natural world.

These experiences were never designed as “subjects”. They were ways through which children gradually understood the world, their community, and themselves. This living tradition of learning is what we today describe as Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS).

The IKS Program for Preschools seeks to thoughtfully reintroduce such experiences into early childhood classrooms, not as information to be taught, but as experiences to be lived.

Through stories, music, nature exploration, cultural practices, and creative expression, the program creates learning environments where children grow with curiosity, sensitivity, imagination, and a sense of belonging.

In this way, the program does not add another subject to the preschool curriculum. Instead, it helps create a learning environment where culture, creativity, and inquiry become a natural part of everyday learning.

The Panchkosha Framework

The IKS Program for Preschools draws inspiration from the Panchkosha framework, an ancient Indian understanding of human development described in the Upanishadic tradition.

According to this framework, human growth unfolds across five interconnected layers, each supporting the development of the whole person.

  • Annamaya Kosha: The physical layer, movement, sensory experiences, and bodily awareness.

  • Pranamaya Kosha: The vital layer, rhythm, breath, energy, and engagement with life.

  • Manomaya Kosha: The emotional and imaginative layer, feelings, expression, and creativity.

  • Vijnanamaya Kosha: The layer of understanding, curiosity, inquiry, and developing awareness.

  • Anandamaya Kosha: The inner layer of harmony, joy, balance, and a sense of wellbeing.

In early childhood, these layers are naturally engaged when children learn through movement, music, storytelling, nature exploration, creative expression, and hands-on experiences.

The Panchkosha framework therefore provides a holistic lens for designing learning experiences, ensuring that the child’s development is nurtured not only intellectually, but also physically, emotionally, creatively, and inwardly.

Through this approach, learning becomes integrated, joyful, and deeply meaningful for the child.

Program Structure

The IKS Program for Preschools is designed for children in the foundational stage (2–6 years).

The program progresses gradually across four levels, allowing children to engage with experiences that grow with their age, curiosity, and understanding.

  • 2–3 years: Playgroup

  • 3–4 years: Nursery

  • 4–5 years: LKG

  • 5–6 years: UKG

At each stage, children explore learning through stories, music, nature, creative expression, and hands-on experiences, while the themes and activities gradually deepen as the child grows.

Program Components

The IKS Program is supported through two core components that help schools implement the curriculum smoothly and meaningfully.

1. KOSHA VIDYA LEARNING BOOKS

The program includes two complementary learning books at each level, designed specifically for early childhood classrooms.

  • Kosha Vidya – Indian Art & Culture (IAC): Introduces children to Bharat’s cultural traditions through ayurveda, music, festivals, stories, art, and nature.

  • Kosha Vidya – STREAM: Nurtures curiosity through Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics via exploration and hands-on learning.

Together, the two books offer a balanced learning experience where cultural understanding and exploratory thinking grow side by side.

2. PANCHKOSHA TEACHER TRAINING

Teachers participating in the program receive specialised training based on the Panchkosha framework of holistic development.

The training includes:

  • Understanding the Panchkosha Framework – exploring how the five layers of development can be nurtured naturally in early childhood classrooms.

  • Experiential Facilitation – learning how to guide children through stories, music, nature exploration, and creative expression in meaningful ways.

  • Integrating IKS into Daily Classroom Life – introducing cultural experiences, rhythms, and practices as natural parts of the learning environment.

  • Observation and Child Sensitivity – developing the ability to observe children’s responses, curiosity, and emotional engagement during learning experiences.

  • Designing Joyful Learning Environments – creating classrooms where movement, creativity, inquiry, and reflection coexist naturally.

This training prepares teachers to facilitate the program not merely as a set of activities, but as a holistic learning experience for the child.

The Transformation We Aim to Nurture

Through sustained engagement with the program, children show visible growth across key dimensions of development.

  • Cultural Awareness & Identity: Children develop early familiarity with Indian stories, music, symbols, festivals, and traditions, nurturing a natural sense of connection with the cultural rhythms of Bharat.

  • Observation & Curiosity: Children demonstrate stronger attention, observation, and questioning abilities while exploring nature, patterns, sounds, and everyday phenomena.

  • Creative Expression: Children participate more confidently in music, storytelling, art, and imaginative activities, strengthening their ability to express thoughts and emotions.

  • Emotional Balance & Social Sensitivity: Through shared experiences, stories, and cultural practices, children develop empathy, cooperation, and emotional awareness in group settings.

IKS Program in Action

Introducing Indian Knowledge Systems to young children is not straightforward. Cultural ideas cannot be taught through explanation or information at this age. Young children learn through experience, repetition, rhythm, and sensory engagement.

The IKS Program has been carefully designed to translate deeper cultural knowledge into simple, meaningful learning experiences suited for early childhood.

Children encounter music through rhythm and sound, explore nature and wellbeing through Ayurvedic ideas, engage with wisdom through traditional stories, and discover science, patterns, and structures through hands-on exploration. Cultural practices, symbols, and values become familiar through everyday experiences that children can see, hear, touch, and participate in.

Through this thoughtful design, children do not merely learn about culture, they begin to experience it naturally as part of their learning and daily life.

Bring the IKS Program to Your Preschool

Across the country, there is a growing recognition that the foundational years must reconnect children with the knowledge traditions of Bharat. The question is no longer whether IKS should reach young learners, but how to introduce it meaningfully in early childhood classrooms.

The IKS Program offers preschools an opportunity to be part of this shift. Schools implementing the program become early adopters of a thoughtfully designed framework that brings Indian Knowledge Systems into the foundational years in a structured, authentic, and developmentally appropriate way.

If your preschool would like to introduce the IKS Program, our team will guide you through the program structure, implementation process, and teacher training support.
